The Gardener’s Calendar in August

“Fairest of the months! Ripe summer’s queen
The hey-day of the year
With robes that gleam with sunny sheen
Sweet August doth appear.”
– R. Combe Miller

Sunrise & Sunset times…

The warmest month of the year, despite the shortening days, August is usuall warm to hot and generally fairly dry. But hey, this is the UK we are talking about so be prepared for some variety! In the flower garden some of the earlier flowering varieties are looking a bit tired and may want trimming back but this is also when many annuals come into their own, branching out after their early flush of flowers you’ll get more, if smaller, flowers. It’s a great time to be in the garden so keep your plants watered (if possible) when dry and remember to take the ooportunity to relax and enjoy your surroundings.

Gardening tasks in August:

  1. Ensure perennials don’t dry out, particularly Autumn flowring ones such as Michealmas Daisies, Golden rod, Helenium etc.
  2. Water pot grown flowers EVERY day, even when it has rained! Feed if required (read instructions on bottles for frequency as you can over-feed as well as underfeed). All liquid and granular feeds available at Bumbles.
  3. Good time to take cuttings of heathers or, if you prefer, simply replace old plants with new stock.
  4. Dead-head annuals regularly and keep watered.
  5. Cut down fruited raspberries when they finish cropping. Continue summer-pruning of Apples/Pears etc.
  6. Finish summer-trimming Hawthorn hedges.
  7. Mow lawns regularly. Water in dry spells but don’t worry if your lawn turns brown in very hot summers, grass has a remarkable capacity for rejuvenation once the rains come.
  8. Feed rose beds with sulphate of potash.
  9. Continue dead-heading Dahlias. Remove young buds on side-shoots if you wish to create large blooms, leave them in place if you prefer a bushy plant with more, but smaller, flowers.
