It’s no secret that we get really excited about roses here at Bumbles. And that excitement has grown with the arrival of a range of charity roses from local supplier Philip Harkness!
Harkness Roses have been breeding and growing over 200 varieties of exquisite British Roses for more than 140 years. Celebrated for their astounding beauty, delightful fragrance and repeat-flowering blooms, these roses have been ever-present in Britain’s gardens for decades.
Even more exciting and very much in line with our hearts, each of these roses is linked to a very special charity. With every rose purchased, £2.50 will be donated to the affiliated charity, making this not only an incredibly beautiful must-have, but a heart-felt MUST-DO, too.
There is one in particular that stands out for us – The Captain Tom Rose. Not just a winner rose, but an exceptional cause too.
The Captain Tom Rose
A wonderful Hybrid Tea Rose variety that will be eye catching in every garden. The Captain Tom Rose has gorgeous double blooms repeatedly throughout the summer, in a bright red. This rose can be planted in beds, borders or in a pot.
The story of The Captain Tom Foundation is the story of one man, the people he cared for, and the people he inspired. After fracturing his hip at 98, Captain Sir Tom was told by his nurse to ‘keep moving’ just as the lockdown of 2020 began, and so his personal challenge was born: to complete 100 laps of his garden, at 50 meters a time, before his hundredth birthday. Captain Sir Tom decided to give something back to the healthcare staff putting their lives on the line for all of us hoping to raise £1,000 for NHS charities. £38.9 million* later, a whole nation had been inspired and admiration drawn from around the world for this incredible foundation.
A wonderful Floribunda Rose variety with gorgeous bight pink double flowers, which bloom repeatedly throughout the summer.
Save9Lives is an organ donation campaign, founded by NHS Organ Donation Ambassador – Jim Lynskey – which vibrantly advocates their message that one organ donor could save or enhance up to nine lives through transplant.
The England Ruby Rose
This beautiful hybrid tea variety boasts a fresh fragrance and dark green, disease-resistant foliage. With large deep red blooms and long straight stems, this is a perfect rose for cutting.
This stunning new red rose variety has been produced exclusively for the RFU to mark the 150th anniversary of English Rugby. Money raised will help fund the RFU Injured Players Foundation which provides support to players with catastrophic spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury. The Rose is an official registered trademark of the Rugby Football Union.
Thank you to our plants manager, Ross, for bringing these beautiful varieties to Bumbles and affording us the opportunity to support such an important, sentimental, and truly worthy group of charities.
Come on down to Bumbles and do your bit for charity with these gorgeous roses!
